Her dream of becoming a paediatrician came true when she was offered a post as a registrar in the department of Paediatrics in Bloemfontein in November 1999. She wrote her final exams in 2002 and won the Novartis prize for best Paediatric student.
During 2003 she gained extra experience in the UK in different hospitals in Paediatrics and Neonatology.

Dr Heyns has a passion to work with children. She has an easy friendly manner and sees her job as much as an educator and child advocator as a medical practitioner.
She sees children from birth to 16 years, for any problem ranging from acutely sick children, through medical concerns, education on health topics including diet and behaviour, general health checks etc.
She often lectures to colleges but her passion lies with educating parents. She has made an appearance on several informative TV shows as well as on Radio. She is actively involved with the ante-natal classes and other platforms of public awareness and education.
Dr Heyns is fluent in English and Afrikaans, and will speak the language or preference of the patient.
She is dedicated to making the doctor experience a pleasant one for the parents, brothers and sisters as well as the child.
Often referred to as the teddy bear doctor in the teddy bear room – her office is child friendly with numerous toys and activities to keep the kids occupied while dr Heyns consults with the parents first. The examination area is set up to involve the parents as part of the exam, thereby creating a safe and playful experience for the child. The office is child friendly, so while the child is playing the parent can sit back, relax and enjoy all the information that will be given to them on various topics, relating to both the illness that the parent brought the child in for and any other health related topics.
