Dr Kathy Krige
Kathy obtained her MBChB degree from the University of Stellenbosch in 1998. She commenced her house doctor year at the paediatrics ward of Hottentots Holland Hospital in Somerset West and promptly decided that she wanted to spend the rest of her life working with children.
‘I just love children and working with them every day gives me tremendous joy,’Kathy says.
Kathy follows a holistic approach in her practice, as she sees the health of the child as an extension of the whole family’s health. She therefore encourages mothers and fathers to go for annual checkups and to look after their own health.
Kathy specialised in paediatrics at the Royal Aberdeen Maternity Hospital in Scotland, with further training in London at Guy’s Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and St George’s Hospital. She is a member of Britain’s Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. After returning to South Africa in 2004, Kathy spent two and a half years gaining further training at Cape Town’s Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and was admitted as a Fellow of the College of Paediatricians in 2006.
Kathy has been in private practice at Thriving Kids since 2007, but would ideally like to see more cooperation between private and state paediatrics. Kathy is involved in the Thriving Kids’ HIV Clinic that operates one Saturday a month under the leadership of Dr Shaun Barnabas, a Paediatric Infectious Diseases Specialist. The HIV clinic assists HIV positive children with counselling, the commencement of anti-retroviral treatment and patient monitoring.
When not working, Kathy loves spending time with her two young boys, listening to music and running.
